New Law Requiring Fire Extinguishers In One And Two Family Dwellings

by Alan P. Fox, Esq.

The acting govern of New Jersey recently signed a new law effective November 1, 2005 requiring portable fire extinguishers in the kitchen area as a requirement for the issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy. The fire extinguisher is required to be (1) rated for residential use consisting of type ABC extinguishing agent; (2) rated no larger than 10 pounds; and (3) mounted within 10 feet of the kitchen area, unless otherwise permitted by the enforcing agency.
