Capehart Scatchard
is a regional business and litigation law firm located in the heart of Southern New Jersey and approximately 20 minutes east of Philadelphia. We are one of the oldest law firms in New Jersey and have enjoyed steady growth in handling challenging and diverse legal work since being formed in 1876. The Firm's practice areas encompass every major area of law and our clients signify the diversity of the areas in which we live and work. We proudly represent clients working in large and small corporations, non-profit organizations, family-owned businesses, governmental entities, academic institutions, manufacturers, railroad companies, franchisors, publicly and privately-held businesses, trade associations, and individuals.
Capehart Scatchard recognizes one of its greatest assets: its people. We have created the right mix of professionals at every level to make this philosophy work. Our lawyers bring impressive credentials from other firms or positions in government or business to join with Capehart lawyers who have established outstanding track records during their long careers with us. Our attorneys are supported by trained paralegals and administrative personnel working in a modern facility with state-of-the-art technology.
Despite its size, Capehart Scatchard maintains a friendly, informal working environment in which the value of camaraderie and an open door policy underscores the collegial feeling of working together.
The Firm is wholeheartedly committed to a policy of equal employment opportunity and cultural diversity for all prospective and present employees. Our belief is that diversity enhances the quality of the Firm and enriches the experience of all its employees. We recruit employees without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, disability, marital status, or sexual orientation.
Recruitment
Although the majority of our lawyers began their legal careers with us here at Capehart Scatchard, the Firm does hire a number of attorneys from other firms, corporations, and the public sector community on an as-needed basis. The diversity of our Firm community is a great source of its strength. Capehart Scatchard accepts and indeed welcomes employment applications from all interested qualified law students, judicial law clerks, and lateral attorneys. The nature of our practice dictates that we seek attorneys who demonstrate:
- an exemplary academic achievement
- excellent communications skills
- leadership potential and motivation to excel
- superior writing skills
- a teamwork mentality
- a level of high integrity and ethical values
When a new attorney joins the Firm, he or she is assigned to a practice area, depending on his or her interests and the Firm's needs at the time. A supervising attorney is assigned to oversee professional development and to help guide the new attorney in his or her practice, as well as to conduct periodic reviews and evaluations. New associates are evaluated every six months during their first year and annually thereafter.
Our practice areas are large enough to allow autonomy in the daily work life yet still the right size to embrace the close attention and training from Firm shareholders; we feel we have found the balance to ensure our associates' success in learning the legal ropes and becoming a highly qualified member of our team. One of the benefits of Capehart Scatchard's training program is the hands-on experience associates will receive early on in their careers. Not only will they be given substantive work assignments, depending on their willingness and motivation, but they can also expect to have early and frequent client contact.
We recognize the importance of family responsibilities and community service, and encourage all our attorneys to become active in charitable, community, and professional organizations. Many of our attorneys are actively involved with local and state bar associations, regularly speak to business, legal and trade groups, serve on a number of civic and academic boards, and participate in a variety of professional associations. Capehart Scatchard believes that a well-rounded attorney is one who not only invests in the development of a long-term practice with the Firm but also who enjoys a fulfilling life outside the practice of law.
Summer Program
The Firm's summer program is designed to give law clerks an opportunity to get a feel of what it would be like to be a Capehart Scatchard associate. Summer clerks work on real projects and have an opportunity to explore many areas of the law and to work directly with a number of attorneys within the Firm who concentrate in a wide variety of legal fields. In addition to research and writing, our summer clerks have an opportunity to attend depositions, trials, client meetings, hearings, conferences, and closings. To encourage a quality work product, to accentuate the value of our summer program, and to provide useful feedback and review, our clerks are evaluated at periodic intervals throughout the summer program.
Our Summer Program is one of Capehart Scatchard's primary sources of identifying qualified candidates for first-year associate positions.
