On October 24, 2019, Capehart Scatchard Shareholder, Sanmathi (Sanu) Dev, Esq., spoke at the Forty-Ninth Annual School Law Forum held at the Atlantic City Convention Center.

Ms. Dev participated in a presentation regarding Title IX, Affirmative Action, and Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying (HIB).

Ms. Dev concentrates her practice on school law and labor and employment law.  She is experienced in representing, advising, and defending boards of education and charter schools in all areas of school law including: labor and employment, special education, Section 504, student discipline and civil rights.  She leads Capehart Scatchard’s School Law Blog, which focuses on cases, court decisions, and current developments affecting education law in the state of New Jersey.  Ms. Dev is the Chair of the Firm’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee, which seeks to facilitate the Firm’s efforts to achieve and maintain a diverse and inclusive workplace at every level of our organization.   Ms. Dev also serves as the Firm’s Hiring Shareholder.  She received her law degree from Rutgers Law School at Camden and her B.A. degree from Boston University.

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Capehart Scatchard held a “Jeans Month” fundraiser for the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. (NBCF).

To support the cause, attorneys and staff were asked to donate $25 to wear jeans to work for the entire month of October.  For those employees who did not wish to participate the entire month, a $2 donation was requested every day they wore jeans to the office. The firm is pleased to announce that “Jeans Month” raised $1434 for NBCF.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation was founded in 1991 by breast cancer survivor, Janelle Hail. NBCF continues to grow every year to help more and more women around the world by educating them about breast cancer and providing free mammograms to women in need.

On October 29, 2019, Capehart Scatchard shareholder, Lauren Tedesco, participated in the first annual Practice Area Fair held at Rutgers Law School in Camden.

The Practice Area Fair offered practicing attorneys the opportunity to educate students about a particular area of law practice.  The event was intended to give participants a better understanding of the work involved in the various types of law practice.  During the event, Ms. Tedesco discussed her work in the area of School Law with the students.

Ms. Tedesco, a Gladwyne, PA resident, concentrates her practice on the representation of boards of education and charter schools in all areas of school law including: labor and employment, special education, Section 504, student discipline, FERPA, Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act, student residency, civil rights, tenure, OPRA, OPMA, and teaching staff tenure matters under TEACHNJ and ACHIEVENJ.

Capehart Scatchard was a hole sponsor at the 2019 Atlantic County Bar Association (“ACBA”) Golf Tournament.  All proceeds from the event will go toward ACBA’s community outreach programs.

The tournament took place at the Linwood Country Club on October 4, 2019.

Capehart Scatchard is pleased to announce that Adam W. Scheinbach, Esq. has recently joined its Litigation Department as a shareholder.

Mr. Scheinbach has more than 22 years of experience as an attorney handling matters in insurance subrogation, insurance coverage, tort defense, personal injury, business and corporate agreements, and general litigation. His practice caters to insurance companies, attorneys, and business owners.

He received his B.A. degree in 1993 from the University of Delaware and his J.D. in 1996 from Brooklyn Law School.  Mr. Scheinbach is admitted to practice law in New Jersey and New York.  He is a member of the New York State Trial Lawyers Association and the National Association of Subrogation Professionals.

Capehart Scatchard Shareholder, Carmen Saginario Jr., recently spoke at the Government Finance Officers Association of New Jersey’s 2019 Fall Conference in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Mr. Saginario spoke on the topic of “To Arbitrate or Not to Arbitrate – That is the Question.”   In his presentation, he addressed the negotiations process and the nine factors an interest arbitrator considers when making an award.  Additionally, Mr. Saginario discussed the impact of the 2017 sunset on the 2% cap on binding interest arbitration awards.

Mr. Saginario, a Cinnaminson resident and Co-Chair of the Firm’s Labor and Employment Department, focuses his practice on employment counseling and litigation. He regularly counsels clients on litigation avoidance, personnel policies, and procedures including those associated with the FMLA, ADA, and Fair Labor Standards Act.  He also handles employment discipline, layoffs, terminations, and internal investigations, and regularly appears before Federal and State courts and administrative agencies regarding employment matters.

Capehart Scatchard is pleased to announce that Sheila M. Mints, Chair of the firm’s Cannabis Law Practice, was recently appointed by the New Jersey State Bar Association to be a member of its Cannabis Law Special Committee.

According to the NJSBA, the mission of the Cannabis Law Special Committee is to bring together a group of attorneys who examine the many legal issues – from civil or business to criminal – that will stem from medical, and potential consumer access to cannabis.

Ms. Mints, a resident of Riverton, counsels businesses, public entities, and entrepreneurs interested in entering the multifaceted cannabis market. Additionally, Ms. Mints Chairs the Healthcare Law Practice where she specializes in healthcare transactional matters, including shareholder and employment agreements, purchases and sales of medical practices, including ACO transactions, and practice mergers.

Capehart Scatchard is pleased to announce that paralegal, Kay M. Sowa, was appointed by the Supreme Court of New Jersey to the Court’s District Ethics Committee for Burlington County.

Ms. Sowa’s appointment is for a four-year term on the Committee, one of 18 district committees established by the Supreme Court to investigate, prosecute, and recommend discipline in ethics cases involving New Jersey attorneys.

In addition to her paralegal duties in tax, accounting and litigation matters relating to trusts, estates and individuals, Ms. Sowa is an IRS Enrolled Agent eligible to represent taxpayers before all administrative levels of the IRS.  She is also a Certified Trust and Financial Advisor through the Institute of Certified Bankers and an Accredited Estate Planner® as designated by the National Association of Estate Planners & Councils.

In an effort to help local children prepare for the upcoming school year, employees of Capehart Scatchard recently collected school supplies to benefit Operation Fill-A-Backpack, sponsored by Oaks Integrated Care.

Additionally, on Wednesday, August 14, 2019, the firm held a Jeans Day fundraiser to support the cause. Attorneys and staff donated $2 to wear jeans to work for the day.  Over $250 was raised, and will be sent, along with the many school supplies collected, to Oaks Integrated Care.

Oaks Integrated Care is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for children, adults and families living with a mental illness, addiction or developmental disability.

Capehart Scatchard Shareholders, Amy C. Goldstein, Esq. and Betsy G.
