Capehart Scatchard workers’ compensation attorney, Richard E. Hickey, III, former Administrative Supervisory Judge of the Division of Workers’ Compensation recently spoke at a seminar on “The New Jersey Workers’ Compensation System” sponsored by the New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education.

Judge Hickey spoke on the topic of “Protecting Medicare.”  In his presentation he covered how to protect Medicare’s interest and how to determine eligibility.

Judge Hickey, a Woolwich Twp. resident, received his law degree from Suffolk University School of Law and his B.S. degree in business administration from American International College.   He currently serves as an adjunct professor for Rutgers Camden School of Law.  Judge Hickey served as a Workers’ Compensation Judge from 1991 until 2009.  Prior to becoming a judge, he served as the Prosecutor for the County of Gloucester from 1986 until 1991.

On Thursday, July 28th, Capehart Scatchard Shareholder, John H. Geaney, Esq., has the honor of introducing one of the 15 students receiving a Kids’ Chance of New Jersey Scholarship. The student Mr. Geaney will be introducing is Will Gardner. “Will has been overcoming obstacles all his young life. He is a fighter.” said Geaney. Kids’ Chance of New Jersey was created to provide scholarships for college and vocational education to children of New Jersey workers who have been fatally or catastrophically injured in a work-related accident. Gardner’s father, Bill Gardner, who worked for Fed-Ex as a truck driver, lost his life in a work- related truck accident on October 16, 2012, during Will’s freshman year of high-school. “Besides the emotional toll that this event had on Will and his family, his father’s death also had an immediate financial impact,” said Geaney. Will’s mother, Lisa, sold their home and moved the family to Manalapan, NJ, where he attended high school. Gardner is currently enrolled in Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, NJ. Having had a passion for technology and computers since he was two-years-old, he plans on getting a four-year degree in Computer Networking and Security.

The first Kids’ Chance organization was founded in 1988 by workers’ compensation attorney Robert Clyatt in Vadosta, Georgia. After incorporating the inaugural Kids’ Chance group in Georgia, the organization began reaching out to other states; now over half of the United States have their own independent groups.

Capehart Scatchard Shareholder, Thomas D. Begley III, was recently interviewed by Bob Mason, a nationally known elder law attorney from North Carolina, who has created a podcast known as the Trust Hacker.  In these podcasts, Mr. Mason interviews attorneys from all over the country regarding issues effecting trusts, estates, elder law and special needs planning.

In the podcast episode entitled, “Practicing in a Rough Neighborhood,”  Mr. Begley chatted with Mr. Mason about beginning to practice elder law years ago with his father, the challenges of practicing in an aggressive (regulatory and administrative) jurisdiction, selecting fiduciaries, and educating fiduciaries.

A resident of Moorestown, Mr. Begley is the Chair of the Trusts and Estates Group at Capehart Scatchard.  He is routinely recognized as one of the top lawyers in New Jersey by a variety of publications including Super Lawyers, SJ Magazine and South Jersey Magazine.  He is a Certified Elder Law Attorney as recognized by the National Elder Law Foundation.

Capehart Scatchard is pleased to announce that Nicholas A. Dibble, Esq. will be writing a recurring column for WC Magazine.  The magazine is published six times a year and covers the trends and topics of interest to professionals responsible for the cost-effective resolution of workers’ compensation claims. Mr. Dibble, a Haddonfield resident, represents insurance carriers and employers in the defense of workers’ compensation claims at all stages of litigation. He received his law degree from Rutgers University School of Law in Camden and his B.A. degree in Political Science from Haverford College. Upon law school graduation, Mr. Dibble worked as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Benjamin C. Telsey, Superior Court of New Jersey, in Bridgeton, NJ.  He is admitted to practice law in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

On June 11, 2016, Amy Goldstein was sworn in as President of the New Jersey State Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (NJ.AAML.org).   The AAML is a national non-profit membership organization of 1,600 members that encourages the study, improves the practice, elevates the standards and advances the cause of matrimonial law to the end that the welfare of the family and society is protected. Ms. Goldstein has been a Fellow of the AAML since 1995 and has served in numerous positions with that organization.

Ms. Goldstein also served as an appointed member of the New State Bar Association Family Law Executive Committee for nine years and has been appointed to serve on many other state and county legal organizations. She has been named for many years by the Martindale-Hubbell Bar Register as a Preeminent Lawyer and she has been selected by her peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America© (copyright 2013 by Woodward/White, Inc. of Aiken, SC) consecutively every year since 2010. Capehart Scatchard Shareholder Thomas J. Walls, Jr., Esq. recently addressed attendees at the New Jersey Association of Counties Annual Conference held in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Mr. Walls’ presentation was entitled, “Reinventing Your Workers’ Comp Program to Reduce Losses and Costs.”  In his presentation he covered what is driving comp losses and what can be done to prevent losses.  Additionally, he spoke on maximizing the employer’s right to authorize the treating physician in workers’ compensation cases.

Mr. Walls, a Hamilton Township resident, is certified by the Supreme Court of New Jersey as a Workers’ Compensation Law attorney. He focuses his practice in workers’ compensation matters defense matters and also has extensive experience in the litigation of personal injury matters.

Capehart Scatchard shareholder Nancy J. Johnson, Esq. recently spoke at the New Jersey State Bar Meeting in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

In her presentation, Ms. Johnson spoke, along with the Honorable Carmine Taglialatella, on the trial and Appellate Division decisions in the Catrambone v. Bally’s Park Place case. This case is currently pending before the Supreme Court for a final decision.

Ms. Johnson, a New Jersey resident, concentrates her practice in the defense of workers’ compensation representing major self-insured corporations, insurance companies and clients of third-party administrators.  She is a frequent lecturer on workers’ compensation and Medicare issues.  She is certified by the Supreme Court of New Jersey as a Workers’ Compensation Law attorney, Ms. Johnson is an officer of the New Jersey State Bar Association Workers’ Compensation section and a member of the College of Workers’ Compensation Attorneys and Justice James Coleman Workers’ Compensation Inn of Court.

2016 SJ Food Bank3

Employees of Capehart Scatchard recently participated in the Fourth Annual Food Bank of South Jersey’s “Hunger Games” food competition.  The fundraiser was held at the Food Bank headquarters in Pennsauken, NJ on April 28, 2016 and raised over $28,000.

The Food Bank Hunger Games is an entertaining, team building challenge with proceeds going to benefit the Food Bank’s hunger relief programs for children. Corporate teams get one box of mystery ingredients and 45 minutes to whip up a dish for three food savvy judges in a live cooking competition.  Each participating team consists of four members, and a culinary advisor mentor, who work together to create a meal from a box of food items that the Food Bank typically distributes through its pantry network.

Capehart Scatchard Shareholder, John H. Geaney, Esq., recently spoke at a meeting of the NJSIG – NJEIF Subfund.

Mr. Geaney addressed issues school boards face in workers’ compensation cases, including pension issues as decided in the case of James v. Board of Trustees and the issue of why workers’ compensation payments are not taxable.  He also spoke about how boards of education can reduce their workers’ compensation costs.

A seasoned workers’ compensation practitioner for over 30 years, Mr. Geaney, a Moorestown resident, is the author of Geaney’s New Jersey Workers’ Compensation Manual and A Guide to Employment Issues Under the ADA & FMLA distributed by the New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education.  Mr. Geaney concentrates his practice in the representation of employers in workers’ compensation defense matters, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the Family and Medical Leave Act.
