Capehart Scatchard is pleased to announce that in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the Diversity & Inclusion Committee at the firm, in conjunction with the Diversity Inclusion and Leadership Committee of the Burlington County Bar Association (BCBA), made over one hundred greeting cards for residents of the Doreatha D. Campbell Senior Housing Complex in Willingboro, NJ.

The card-making project was undertaken in partnership with the Volunteer Center of Burlington County’s 17th Annual MLK Day Challenge. On January 5 and January 12, attorneys and staff from the firm and the BCBA gathered at the firm’s Mount Laurel office to decorate cards and write inspiring messages to bring smiles and encouragement to the card recipients.

Alan P. Fox, Esq., Chair of Capehart Scatchard’s Alternative Energy Dept. and Co-Chair of the Real Estate and Land Use Dept., was a speaker for a national continuing legal education webinar held on December 13, 2022 and hosted by NBI.

Mr. Fox’s topic was Solar and Wind Land Use and Zoning Issues, which is a growing part of his land use law practice. He discussed the various factors that contribute to New Jersey’s and the nation’s growth and development of the solar industry, including federal and state tax incentive programs. He covered navigating critical issues necessary for obtaining permits and approvals for solar projects before local zoning and planning boards as well as state agencies.  Mr. Fox reviewed various governmental incentive programs and recent changes to local zoning laws and state laws that encourage the development of solar and wind projects.

Mr. Fox is also scheduled to be a speaker for a NBI national webinar entitled Land use and Zoning Issues 2023, which is scheduled to take place on February 1, 2023. Mr. Fox will be speaking on Top Local Government Land Use Issues in 2023 and Airbnb, VRBO, and Other Short-Term Rentals: Land Use Challenges.

On December 13, 2022, Workers’ Compensation Department Associate, Amanda J. McNelly, Regina Philipps, Partner at Madden & Madden, P.A., and Briana Smalley, a third year student at Villanova University Law School, presented a CLE entitled “Disability Inclusion: Awareness & Allyship.” School Law Department Shareholder, Sanmathi “Sanu” Dev, served as moderator for the panel discussion hosted by the Diversity & Inclusion Committee at the firm.

The participants provided an overview of the laws protecting individuals with disabilities, addressed misconceptions of disabilities, and discussed inclusive practices and ways to be an ally.

Capehart Scatchard was a sponsor of the Annual Rutgers Law School – Camden Distinguished Alumni Awards and Scholarship Benefit, held at The Merion in Cinnaminson, NJ on October 27, 2022.

Workers’ Compensation Shareholder, Maura Burk, and Commercial Litigation Associate, Stacey Gorin, attended the event on behalf of the firm, where awards were presented to three distinguished graduates of the law school for their contributions to the legal profession, service to the community and achievements in the legal community.

Capehart Scatchard was a sponsor of the 8th Annual Gala of the South Asian Bar Association of New Jersey (SABA-NJ), held at the Marigold in Somerset, NJ on October 20, 2022. The Honorable Rukhsanah L. Singh, Magistrate Judge for the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, was the keynote speaker.  A highlight of the evening was the presentation of scholarships to current law students to commemorate the Gala.

Shareholder, Sanmathi “Sanu” Dev, an active SABA-NJ member, attended the event along with Associates Natasha Sawh and Saikrishna Srikanth.  The organization is a voluntary association of attorneys and professionals in the New Jersey area dedicated to the needs, concerns and interests of the South Asian community in New Jersey.

On October 11, 2022, a panel of Capehart Scatchard attorneys and New Jersey Superior Court Judicial Law Clerk, Summer Cordasco, presented a CLE entitled “Mental Health in the Legal Profession and Workplace.” Shareholder Ana-Eliza Bauersachs served as moderator for the CLE hosted by the Diversity & Inclusion Committee at the firm.

The panel, composed of Shareholders, Maura Burk, Sanmathi “Sanu” Dev and Yasmeen Khaleel, Associates, Maxx Budline and Stacey Gorin, and Ms. Cordasco, provided insight on mental health issues faced by law school students and legal professionals. Covered topics included the New Jersey Bar Exam’s Character and Fitness inquiries into treatment and mental health diagnoses, reducing the stigma associated with seeking help for mental health issues, and how mental health affects different populations. The CLE wrapped up with an exchange on how to be an ally for someone struggling with mental health issues and strategies for practicing self-care.

Capehart Scatchard Shareholder, John H. Geaney, Esq., spoke on September 27, 2022 at the New Jersey Public Risk Management Association’s (NJPRIMA) First Annual Workers’ Comp Seminar. The event was held at The Boat House at Mercer Lake in West Windsor Township, NJ.

Mr. Geaney, who is a Board Member of NJPRIMA, spoke at a program entitled “Cannabis and Comp.” He presented on the issue of medicinal medical marijuana and its impact on employers, carriers and third party administrators in terms of reimbursement for the cost of medical marijuana, dealing with employees appearing under the influence or using the substance while at work, and whether or not an employer can ever successfully argue that a worker has reached maximal medical improvement with respect to medical marijuana.

Mr. Geaney is Co-Chair of Capehart Scatchard’s Workers’ Compensation Group. He is active in the New Jersey Self Insurers’ Association (Membership and Programs Committees) as well as Kids’ Chance of New Jersey.  Mr. Geaney is a member of the National Workers’ Compensation Defense Network and is the author of Geaney’s New Jersey Workers’ Compensation Manual for Practitioners, Physicians, Adjusters, and Employers.

Attorneys and staff from Capehart Scatchard, along with family members, participated in the 3rd Annual 5K Walk/Run to End Homelessness on September 24, 2022. The event, benefitting Joseph’s House, a homeless shelter in Camden, was held at Cooper River Park in Pennsauken, NJ.

Capehart Scatchard was a Bronze Sponsor of the 5K event. Team Capehart, comprised of 15 walkers and runners, took first place in the amount of funds raised by a team. Workers’ Compensation Department Associate, Daniel Klementowski, took fourth place overall in the race. The firm raised more than $3,700 to help support the mission of Joseph’s House to aid men and women of South Jersey who are experiencing homelessness by offering a continuum of services including emergency shelter, access to supportive housing, and comprehensive social services.

 

Capehart Scatchard proudly announces that Litigation Department Associate, Nuo Jiang, Esq., has been named September’s Volunteer of the Month by Volunteer Lawyers for Justice (VLJ) for his pro bono work.

VLJ provides free legal advice to low income adults, children and families in New Jersey to ensure fair and equal treatment within the legal system.  VLJ mobilizes volunteers to work alongside staff to address critical legal needs across the state, advancing racial, social and economic justice for the vulnerable members of the community.

Mr. Jiang focuses his practice in federal and New Jersey courts on creditor’s rights, business collection, tort defense, premises liability and products liability defense, Tort Claims Act defense, construction, estates, employment and professional malpractice. He received his law degree from Rutgers Law School, Camden; and both a B.S. degree in Microbiology and A.B. degree in Economics from the University of California – Davis.
